Show and Tell themes

Show and Tell Themes

Show and Tell is my favorite part of our Guild meetings—I love seeing all the projects you all have completed. This year I would like to add a “theme” to our Show and Tell that complements our speaker’s topic. Along, of course, with your regular items you’re showing.

For example, our October speaker is Clare O’Donohue, former TV producer of Alex Anderson’s Simply Quilts and author of several quilt-themed murder mysteries. Some suggestions for Show and Tell would be any of your mystery quilts, an Alex Anderson design, quilts with blocks from Clare’s book titles (Drunkards Path, Lover’s Knot, Double Cross.) To encourage you, we will let those with theme quilts go first in Show and Tell, along with your other items, of course.

Some suggestions for the rest of the year
November: Edie McGinnis, noted Kansas City Star columnist and author presents “Feedsacks: Out of the Barnyard and into the Bedroom”. We’d like to see any feedsack quilts, a design from one of Edie’s books, or a Kansas City Star pattern. (Hint: All of last year’s Blocks of the Month were adaptations of Kansas City Star Patterns.)

December: Christmas quilts

January: Program is Best of Show winners from around the area. Bring your own winning quilts.

February: Program is applique artist Angela Lawrence. Let’s see all your applique quilts. President Louise’s “Color your Name” challenge is also due

March: Quilt artist Sue Kluber will teach us embellishing. Bring your embellished quilts.

April: Annmarie Yohnk will talk about redwork. Let’s see the redwork you have done. Heck, let’s see all your red quilts.

May: Board Challenge month.
June: Tula Pink tells us about the life of a fabric designer. Bring your pink quilts. Or anything from her line of Moda fabrics.

July is QuiltFest. We’ll see all our winners.

August: Lynn Doyle shows her seasonal appliques. Bring your own seasonal (Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, etc.) applique projects or a project from one of her patterns.

President’s Challenges

Posted in President's Letter on September 16th, 2010

Hi

We had a great meeting and the program was so inspiring I think I will give designing a try.
Okay here are the President’s Challenges for this year:
The first one is due at the November meeting and it is to be anything made with polka dots..the more dots the better. It can be something as simple as a table topper or bag or an entire quilt.

The second challenge is a little harder for some. You are to use your name and find a color that starts with the letters in your name and make something like a quilt or bag or any project of your choice with these colors.
I went to the crayola web site and found my letters. You could also go to a paint store and look at paint chips that you like for your color scheme or I suppose you could make up your own color names. Your name with the color names is to be pinned on the back of your project out of sight. This challenge will be due Feb. 2011.
Have fun and I am looking forward to what you all come up with for the projects.
Happy quilting and may you always find time to sew. They will always remember your quilt they have, but they will never remember if your house was clean.

September Begins a new Guild Year

Posted in Quilt Show on September 13th, 2010

September brings the start of a new Guild Year and after doing the math, did you know that we will be celebrating our 20th Anniversary as the Ankeny Area Quilters’ Guild? To get things rolling does anyone know when we held our very first Quilt Show? Does anyone know what the theme was and where it was held?? How many Members participated? What ‘special’ thing was allowed to be hung in this quilt show??

For answer to these questions and information on the 2011 Quilt show; please attend the October 12th guild meeting. At that time the raffle show information will be rolled out and hopefully, all your questions will be answered.

Posted in President's Letter on September 11th, 2010

Hi Everyone

Well our new year has begun. We have many new and exciting things going on in our Guild this year. Because of that you wont want to miss a meeting or check out our website for what is going on from month to month.
We will be having quilt buddies to answer questions at the meetings. Kay Huntimer will be available to answer any questions you might have about the quild. She will also have a couple people floating around to answer questions. Please feel free to ask any questions we want all new or old members to be in the know.
We will be having 2 Presidents quilt challenges this year and one is easy and one is a little harder. I will announce them at the Sept meeting and then post it on the websit afterward.
We will be offering 15 schoolarships for membership to the guild. It is 50% off or $15.00. If you are interested in seeking one of these, please put your name and phone on a sheet of paper or e mail me. If there are more than 15 request I will draw names. I will be the only one to handle the request so it will be confidential.
Registration will be held the months of September and October the fee is $30.00. Please get your registrations in before Oct 15th so the membership book can be printed.
Also there will flu shots available at the Oct 12 meeting so plan accordingly. They are covered by Medicare or it is $20.00.

Sorry this got long but there is alot things to cover.

See you at the meeting.

September program

Don’t miss our September program with designer/quilter/teacher Cathy Wierzbicki. Cathy is a former Ankeny resident and AAQG member who has “made it big” on the West Coast. She has been featured in magazines, done on-line TV segments and taught coast to coast at small venues, large international shows and a Caribbean cruise. She has had 5 books published and countless patterns, and developed the All-In-One Ruler and The Quilter’s Boot.

Her quilts capture moods that run the gamut from serene and charming to tongue-in-cheek whimsy. You can see her designs on her website “timetoquilt.com”

Cathy says “Quilting has changed my life & done so for countless others. Whether you are a novice or an experienced quilter, or whether you approach this craft on a small scale or are a dedicated quilter, it matters not. There is so much to be learned, to be shared and to be enjoyed by quilters of all skill levels. I hope you, too, will discover that the fabric of your life has been enriched by those around you, and may you always take “Time to Quilt”

Cathy returns to her Ankeny roots on Tuesday, September 14 at 7:00 PM with her program “Returning to Square One”. The Ankeny Area Quilt Guild meets in Fellowship Hall at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 517 Des Moines Street in Ankeny.
