Edie McGinnis at Nov. meeting

Posted in Programs on October 26th, 2010

Edie McGinnis will be our program presenter on November 9 with “Feedsacks: Out of the Barnyard and into the Bedroom”.  Edie is a Kansas City Star author and editor who has written over a dozen quilt books.  She speaks widely at national and regional meetings and I have it on good authority that she is a hoot!  You won’t want to miss it.  Don’t forget to bring any feedsack quilts or quilts made from Kansas City Star patterns for Show and Tell.

If you want to join Edie for supper at 5:00 at Chips Restaurant (dutch treat), contact Sharon Lesan so we’ll know how big a table to reserve.  sharonlesan@yahoo.com or 965-5608

Well, I am so sorry I missed the October Meeting, I was very sick!  But every thing is moving very well with the retreat!   The earth and water party favors are all done and the wind are half way there! The fire one is on the design board and in the making! I work on these almost every day, might not do much but some little something, cause I am so excited about this retreat! It keeps my pumped!

Just want to say a huge thanks to the Quilt show ladies for including me in on the the donations from vendors and shops, I think this is a great ideal!

Thanks to Lynn for the heads up on the book sale, got some really nice ones for door prizes for the retreat!

November 12th – Sew Night

Posted in Activities on October 18th, 2010

Just a reminder that our first Friday night sew night will take place November 12th from 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm. We have asked Quilting Connection in Ames if they would like to join us. They will be doing a demo of something that is exciting going on in their store and may have items for sale as well. We are encouraging everyone to let us know if you will be coming so that we can make sure we have the appropriate amount of tables and chairs out. This is also an open invitation for you to bring a friend that has maybe thought about joining the Guild but for whatever reason have not done so yet. We will be meeting at the church (Holy Trinity Lutheran Church – 517 S. W. Des Moines Street; Ankeny IA). Please feel free to bring a food item to share with everyone if you would like. You will also need to bring whatever you need in order to sew as we will not be able to provide power strips or extension cords, etc. Please let me know what questions you have. It is sure to be a great time.

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 517 SW Des Moines Street, Ankeny, Iowa from 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm

Thanks to Clare O’Donohue, who was our speaker at the October meeting. Clare is a quilter, former TV producer of Alex Anderson’s “Simply Quilts” (and an impressive number of other TV shows) and author of the “Everyday Quilts” series of quilt-related murder mysteries. She regaled us with tales of her work as a TV producer and as a writer and charmed us as she described her efforts to capture the “spirit of quilters” in her books. Beaverdale Books was at the meeting and made her three books (Lover’s Knot, Drunkard’s Path and Double Cross) available for purchase. Clare is currently working on a new series of mysteries featuring a TV producer.

Color Outside the Lines – Is this year’s quilt show theme.

Posted in Quilt Show on October 13th, 2010

Ankeny Area Quilter’s Guild
Presents: Color Outside the Lines
2011 Quilt Show

This year’s quilt show will be our 20th Anniversary and in celebration of that milestone we wanted a theme that would encompass all the things that allow us to continue to grow as quilters. The guidelines for this year’s theme, to Color Outside the Lines means we need to give ourselves permission to do something that we might not otherwise try to do. What that is will be different for each and every one of us. All we ask is that you try something new. That something new for you might be paper piecing, appliqué, a contemporary style design, maybe your own original design; whatever it is try to approach it like you were picking up colors for the first time and let your creativity take you to a whole new place. We realize that the lack of specific directions may make some feel a little bit uncertain and we would like to offer to you three events to help you through your decision process.

We have set-up three Friday night sew dates to be held at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 517 SW Des Moines Street, Ankeny, Iowa from 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm. The dates are November 12th, January 14th, and March 18th. We are also working with our local quilt shops to see if they would like to sponsor one of our sew dates. Quilting Connection in Ames will be sponsoring our first sew date in November. They will be featuring a new project and have some items available for purchase. There will be no charge to these events all we ask is that you bring anything and everything that you need to work on your projects. That would include extension cords, irons, general sewing tools and other materials. Also if you want to bring something to eat to share that is also being encouraged since most quilters do better with nourishment. Depending on turn out we would encourage you to invite a friend. Maybe you have a friend that has been thinking about joining the guild but haven’t yet, invite them along. As quilters we enjoy getting input from other quilters so don’t be afraid to bounce ideas off of all of us or even if you want to try something new don’t be afraid to ask how to get started. The main purpose of these Friday Night sew dates is just to relax, have some fun and let the creative energy flow. So we can have some idea of who will be attending we would like for you take a moment and complete the signup sheet.

Limited to 25 students

Explore different fabrics and embellishments with this curved pieced wall hanging. All fees paid will reserve your spot for this workshop. A supply list will be provided once fees have been paid. This class will not be cancelled.

PRESENTATION: July 8, 2011 – Borders, Sashings and More

Ilene will present a trunk show and provide discussion on how to add interest to your blocks by your choice of borders and sashings. Come prepared to take home some ideas for your next quilt or bring finished blocks to discuss alternate sashing/border ideas.

SATURDAY, JULY 9TH, 2011 – JOANN BELLING
JoAnn has enjoyed the sewing machine since she began producing her own clothes at age 12. In 1965 she began quilting with heavy polyester fabrics and no formal instruction. Encouraged by a friend she enrolled in classes in 1977 and has designed numerous quilts and wall hangings. She has taught a variety of classes in United States and Japan. Her influence in quilting has been felt from coast to coast. The Belling household has hosted a number of quilt groups for lectures and tours. Her finest work has been reproduced in national publications. JoAnn has received Best of Show and other ribbons on her quilts at the Iowa State Fair and other competitions. A total of 9 quilts have hung at Paducah as well as other national quilt shows. The Quilt Room at Hotel Pattee, Perry, Iowa, is the site for “My Jacobean Garden”. Concepts of color and composition which JoAnn uses in her photographic art are applied to the designing of quilts, borders and quilt back art. All phases of quilting are enjoyed by JoAnn but of greatest interest are the color and design portion. Planning and short cut methods are discussed. Organization in her dream sewing room gives you an insight to the reason JoAnn is able to create a number of quilt works each year.
Whimsical Triangles
WORKSHOP: July 9, 2011 –
9:00 am to 3:00 pm
Limited to 24 students

Enjoy using the equilateral triangle while making triangles, split triangles, diamonds and split diamonds. Color choice, usage and placement in your art piece will all be discussed. Fussy cutting adds humor and individuality. Fusible and machine appliqué scraps in the border complete the whimsy. All fees paid will reserve your spot for this workshop. A supply list will be provided once fees have been paid. This class will not be cancelled.

COUNTRY STORE/BOUTIQUE
In the past the Country Store / Boutique has been something that our guests look forward too. We will continue with the Country Store and Boutique and will be accepting any donations.

SPONSOR / VENDOR DONATIONS
In years past our vendors and sponsors have been extremely generous in donating some wonderful items and at this point we have not received nor made any requests for donations from sponsors or vendors. We are planning to work in conjunction with the Directors at Large and the Retreat Show Chair to limit our multiple requests for donations.

VOLUNTEERS
A successful quilt show does not happen without volunteers and in conjunction with our 20th Anniversary we wanted a different way to recognize our volunteers. We are having an Anniversary pin made by Pin Peddlers and a canvas tote made in honor of our Anniversary. For those individuals that sign up for two shifts will receive an Anniversary pin free; for those that sign up for three shifts they will receive a tote free and for those that sign up for four or more shifts will receive the pin and tote free. We will also be selling these two items for purchase as well. And for everyone that volunteer their names will go into a hat for a gift certificate to a local quilt shop.

FOOD
We are also looking at some different options for food this year and will have more information regarding that as those plans are finalized.

ADMISSION AND RAFFLE QUILT PRICES
This year the cost of admission will be reduced from $6 to $5. Raffle quilt prices will remain at $1 for a single ticket and $5 for six tickets.

Secretary’s Report-September 2010

Posted in Business on October 11th, 2010

AAQG Board Meeting September 7, 2010

Members present: Louise, De, Jan, Sharon, MaryLee, Connie, Sharon, Janeen, Tamara, Susan and Kathy.

Louise called the meeting to order. Secretary minutes for August were posted on the web site and approved. De discussed the treasurer’s report. The 2011 budget was discussed. It was discussed to offer up to 15 membership scholarships. The members will be made aware of these through the web site and at the regular meeting. Board members will be bringing the treats for the September meeting. The membership sign up and payment of fees will be during the September and October meetings. There will be two tables set up (with 3 persons per table) to accept payments. We are still in need of a Vice President and welcome all suggestions for this position. Louise announced she has two president’s challenges in mind. It was decided to sell the car quilt. The budget will be mailed to all paid members after the October meeting. More news will be coming about the Quilt Show at the October meeting.

AAQG Meeting September 14, 2010

Louise called the meeting to order and welcomed us to a new and exciting year. There were 59 members and 3 guests. The guests had the opportunity to introduce themselves. Louise announced that there is an opportunity to sign up for one of 15 scholarships for membership. See Louise if you would like to sign up. Just give her your name and phone number. At the November meeting the church will be having flu shots; the cost is $20 or Medicare. Louise presented Laura Parker a token of signed quilt blocks and a gift certificate for being our president this last year. Thank you Laura for all you have done for the guild, and spearheading the new website. Don’t forget to check the website often, things change, we no longer have to wait for the newsletter! This year there will be “Quilt Buddies” and they will be walking around before the meeting so if you have any questions ask them- we want everyone to know what is going on. Guests and new members will be first in the refreshment line so if they need to meet with the Quilt Buddy they will have that opportunity. Louise reminded those that had checked out a doll to dress for the Salvation Army, they need to be turned in ASAP. Tami Watts has stepped up to be the Vice-President this year. Tami has served as president twice and is currently co-chairing the 2011 Quilt Show. The guild still needs a quilt show elect; this is an important position to fill or there may not be a show in 2012. There will be 2 President’s Challenges this year. The first is due at the November meeting and that is anything made from polka dot fabric. The second is due at the February meeting, this is a quilt done in colors of your name- all the letters in your first name. You must also include on the back the letter and what color it represents. The retreat planning is underway- the theme is Earth, Wind, Fire and Water. The birthdays were honored, and door prizes were given. The block lottery will be a fat quarter lottery this year, and will follow the seasons. So next month will be fall/Halloween fabric. Sharon introduced our speaker, Cathy Wierzbicki from Washington State. Cathy felt like she was coming home since she is a former member of AAQG. This is where she got her start, coming to guild and meeting some lifelong friends. The encouragement from these gals helped her launch into designing and selling her patterns. Not only has she designed patterns but also rulers. Most sewers have many machine feet but do you have the Quilter’s Boot? The meeting wrapped up with show and tell by the members and then wonderful refreshments so we could socialize, or watch as Cathy showed us her binding technique or purchase her awesome patterns or books.

Respectfully submitted, Kathy Evers

Thanks Laura-for a great job!

Presidents October Letter

Posted in President's Letter on October 10th, 2010

Hi All Quilters:
I hope you alll got the opportunity to go to AQS show this past week. It was so good. I am in awe of the beautiful quilts and such talents is inspiring. I have already tried a new technique I learned there. It is a great information sharing event. I ran into fellow guild members working on their Name Presidents challenge.
Okay this months meeting is another thrilling one so you won’t want to miss it. The 2011 Quilt Show info will be rolled out to all and I am so excited. We have a great program planned as always. Tammy, Vice Presiddent has put it out there that she would like the guild to help her get 400-500 pillowcases for her brothers division in Afghanistan. She would like to send them for Christmas so everyone pitch in and do 4 or 5 and we will have the number she needs. Thanks for your help on this, I know they will be appreciated.
Also this month is flu shots at the meeting and registration so come early get your flu shot and register if you haven’t already done so.
See you at the meeting and keeping quilting.
Louise Whitlow
