AAQG Meeting — June 21, 2011

Posted in Business on June 27th, 2011

Louise called the meeting to order and requested cell phones be turned off.  We are starting to think about the board for next year already.  Vice President Tamara suggested that anyone interested in helping on the board should contact her.   There are several great opportunities.  Quilt Co-Chairs Janeen and Tamara are searching for some volunteers for the Saturday of the Quilt Show.  Please consider helping with this event.  We have 21 vendors and 160 quilts to see during the show.  The lunch each day of the show is only $6 and there will be sweets for you as well.  Deb Dickerson advised there have been 997 tickets sold so far.  Thanks for all you help in selling tickets.   Retreat Chair Connie reminds us to save just $15 each month for the April 19-22, 2012 quilt retreat.
Our speaker this evening is Tula Pink.  Tula is an exciting young graphic artist and fabric designer who has worked in everything from museums to the rock music industry. She says that fabric and sewing have been a constant in her life and calls herself “an exiled rock princess on a throne of bolts and bobbins”.  She credits her Mom with her entry into fabric design as she gave her the gentle nudge to pursue her options.  During her free time while she was working for Capital Records Tula began drawing fabric lines.  We are so glad she did.  Her collections are delightful.  Her first email sent to Moda fabrics resulted in her fabric line being in production 36 hours later.  What a wonderful gift she has.  She and her mother own a fabric shop in Stewartsville, Missouri.  Her latest line is Prince Charming.  It is being produced through Westminster Fibers.  We all enjoyed her stories of the fabric line as well as the hidden animals in some of the prints.
Directors at Large Jan and Sharon finished out our meeting with the fat quarter lottery, won by Louise Whitlow.  June birthdays were celebrated and we finished our meeting with some delicious treats.

Members present were Louise Whitlow, Sharon McCarthy, De Tapper, Jan Heddinger, Tamara Watts- McPhail, Janeen Pearson and Susan Body.

Louise called the meeting to order.

We began with a reminder about our next guild meetings. The June and July guild meetings will be
held on the THIRD Tuesdays. Mark your calendars for June 21st and July 19th. The June speaker will be Tula Pink… My Life in Repeat. Join us for dinner with our speaker before the guild meeting; we’ll dine at Yanni’s in Ankeny at 5pm.

The treasurer’s report was presented by De. A motion was made by Tamara and seconded by Janeen to approve the following checks:
Checks written over $100 for May are as follows:

5/9/11   2584    HTLC (donation)    $125.00

Motion was approved.
The current checking account balance is $6400.53

Tamara gave the vice-president’s report. It is time to form a nominating committee for next year’s board members. Susan will help Tamara with this but other volunteers are welcomed. Positions to be filled include:

  • Director-at-large-elect
  • Retreat chair-elect
  • Vice-President
  • Quilt-show chair-elect
  • Treasurer
  • Communications-elect

Tamara and Janeen gave an update on the Quilt Show. There will be 21 vendors, 2 food vendors, and approximately 150 quilts on display. Our guild has had wonderful support from Quilter’s Cupboard in Ankeny, Quilting Connection in Ames and Adel Quilting & Dry Goods in Adel. Guild members— please thank these shops for all their help and support of our show next time you visit them!

Quilter’s Cupboard has donated a sewing machine ($600 value) that will be given to the guild member that has the highest raffle ticket sales.

If you would like to drop your quilts off in advance of the show, Quilters Cupboard is the drop-off site again this year. They will be accepting quilts from June 27th–Wednesday, July 6th, by closing time.

Our “Sewtique” (aka “The Country Store”) still needs more STUFF! Please consider making an item or two—this is a big fund-raiser for us!!

There are still opening in the two classes that will be held during the quilt show. Ilene Bartos’ class is “Red Swirls” and meets Friday, July 8, 9-11:30 am. JoAnn Belling’s class “Whimsical Triangles” meets on Saturday, July 9, 9am-3pm.

The quilt show committee mentioned that long-time guild member July Herrin’s friends had entered some quilts of Judy’s in our show for her. The board unanimously decided to give Judy one of our membership scholarships so she would officially be a member this guild year and her quilts could be displayed in the show.

Meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Susan Body

Tula Pink in June

Don’t miss our June 21 Guild meeting when Tula Pink (yes, that’s her real name) will present “My Life in Repeat”.  Tula is an exciting young graphic artist and fabric designer who has worked in everything from museums to the rock music industry.  She says that fabric and sewing have been a constant in her life and calls herself “an exiled rock princess on a throne of bolts and bobbins”.
