Ankeny Area Quilters’ Guild Meeting Minutes for September 9, 2014

Ann Finger welcomed members and visitors to the September guild meeting. She covered some miscellaneous business items.

  1. Membership renewals are due this month and by the October meeting at the latest.
  2. She thanked the members who took blocks for the 2015 raffle quilt for getting them done already!
  3. Members were reminded that we had several open board positions that need to be filled if we want to continue being the progressive guild we have been.
  4. Donations of mittens, scarves, and hats are being asked for so we can keep the K-5th grade Ankeny students warm this winter.
  5. Sew in dates are 10/17/14, 1/16/15, 2/13/15, and 4/17/15 from 6:00 to 11:00
  6. There is a small stock of AAQG t-shirts and denim shirts available.
  7. She encouraged members to signup for these committees: survey review, sew-in, communications, membership, retreat, quilt show, and program committees.

The 2014-2015 budget was presented by Christy Tigges, Treasurer. Some questions were asked on different line items of the budget and these were addressed by Christy or other board members. After Donita Link made the motion to accept the budget, it was seconded, voted on, and passed.

Sandy Bolin-Townes, chairman of the 2015 quilt show, covered several points about the raffle quilt. Blocks are in and will be sewn together in time to get it to Kalona for hand quilting. We also purchased a longer gambling license for the raffle so that tickets can be sold at the Santa’s North Pole Village the first weekend of Dec. A booth was purchased by the guild to get the guild more widely known in the community and have donated country store items available for sale as well as the raffle tickets.

Twin Lakes Conference Center in Manson, IA is the location for the retreat on 4/9-12/15. Anita Allwood said there will be a gentleman there to sharpen scissors, blades, knives, etc. for the retreat attendees. Price is yet to be determined.

Our program for the evening was introduced by Lin Vandeberg. Catherine Noll Litwinow presented “What’s with the hats; Calico Cathy meets Sunbonnet Sue and Overall Sam”. Her trunk show had a wide range of antique and current quilts of many different styles of Sun Bonnet Sue and Overall Sam. Her humor gave the quilts some very interesting names!

Sharon Bunce, Director at Large, awarded many items for participating guild activities.   The fat quarter lottery winner was Kathy Little. Next month the lottery is black and gold for the Hawkeyes so bring a fat quarter and put your name in the lottery! Block of the Month participant, Kathy Little, won a notion item for turning in her block. Sharon said there were three donation quilt kits available for people to take home and finish. The guild has batting and backing if you make the donation top. She said they are in need of solids or prints that read as solids. This year we are going to put labels on the donation quilts with the guild’s name and year made. October needs more people to supply treats. Door prizes went to people who had their name tag on. They were Diane Swanson, Janet DeJagger, Gloria House, and Sandy Bolin-Townes. Monthly birthdays were celebrated with the question “What is your favorite thing about the guild?”

Show and Tell was announced and then an ice cream social was hosted by the current board members.
