Retreat update

Posted in Retreat on February 7th, 2012

Feb 7, 2012 – Are you getting excited about the upcoming quilt retreat?  I sure am.  I’ve been gathering ideas to share with you at the retreat as well as coordinating some fun activities such as our own Ankeny Quilt Guild Retreat Shop Hop.  These shops will probably be new ‘finds’ for some of you and they are excited to welcome in our group.  Each shop will be giving away a small gift that can be used in some of the classes that we are also offering during the retreat.

Shops Participating:

Gingerbread House – Webster City

Tillies Quilts – Fort Dodge

The Family Quilt Shop – Fort Dodge

Lee’s Quilt Shed – Jolley

Quilting on Main – Pocahontas

Towne Square Quilt Shop – Lake City

In addition to the shop hop news I have also lined up a massage therapist who will be onsite during retreat to massage those sore shoulders and stiff necks – oh the price we pay for non-stop quilting fun!

Guests outside of the guild membership will be allowed to join the retreat after our February guild meeting.  Don’t forget to print your registration form and have your payment ready to reserve your seat.

STRING PIECING – Building on Tradition
by Shelly Burge
This workshop will demonstrate the technique of adding string pieced fabrics to
traditional quilt block patterns to create unique new designs. It is a fun and creative
class with lots of room to explore. Students will learn to look at quilt blocks in a whole
new way.
Supply List: Bring an assortment of fat quarters or 1/4 yard pieces of fabrics (10 to
15 fabrics) in your choice of colors (select light, medium and dark values), you could
also bring some large scrap pieces of fabric, a drafting ruler (I like the Quilter’s SeeThru Drafting ruler), 1/4 inch graph paper, colored pencils, scissors, neutral color
piecing thread, pins, medium size rotary cutting mat with ruler and rotary cutter,
sewing machine with extension cord, iron and ironing pad.

  • Walking trail around the lake
  • Great food

The theme for this year’s retreat is ‘Tool Time’ with a focus on learning about various rulers, notions, and techniques.  There will be instructor led training as well as a library of quilting instructional DVDs to watch at your leisure.

Friday Night Sew Night

Posted in Activities, Business on October 28th, 2011

Our next Friday Night Sew event will be taking place 11/11/11 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny.  Since 11/11/11 is such a unique date we wanted to have some fun with it and will be opening the space in the church from 11:00 am to 11:00 pm for a mini retreat.   Please feel free to come and go as you please.  You do not have to stay the full twelve hours.  It is a unique opportunity to have some additional time together and to work on a few projects.   Maybe someone will be able to get 11 projects done.

Quilting Connection in Ames will be our quilt store sponsor for this event.  Will advise at a later time when they will be available.

If you will be attending please be sure to bring everything you need regarding sewing supplies.  That includes power cords, strips, irons, etc.

Hello everyone!

I have a question for those of you that are thinking about going to the retreat in April. On Thursday night which would you prefer to have Pizza or subs from, like Subway or Quiznos? Which ever gets the most votes wins!!

I am working on getting the sign up sheet on here also. I could use some help with this! If I can’t get it then you will have to wait till January meeting to sign up.

Thanks,

Well, I am so sorry I missed the October Meeting, I was very sick!  But every thing is moving very well with the retreat!   The earth and water party favors are all done and the wind are half way there! The fire one is on the design board and in the making! I work on these almost every day, might not do much but some little something, cause I am so excited about this retreat! It keeps my pumped!

Just want to say a huge thanks to the Quilt show ladies for including me in on the the donations from vendors and shops, I think this is a great ideal!

Thanks to Lynn for the heads up on the book sale, got some really nice ones for door prizes for the retreat!

November 12th – Sew Night

Posted in Activities on October 18th, 2010

Just a reminder that our first Friday night sew night will take place November 12th from 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm. We have asked Quilting Connection in Ames if they would like to join us. They will be doing a demo of something that is exciting going on in their store and may have items for sale as well. We are encouraging everyone to let us know if you will be coming so that we can make sure we have the appropriate amount of tables and chairs out. This is also an open invitation for you to bring a friend that has maybe thought about joining the Guild but for whatever reason have not done so yet. We will be meeting at the church (Holy Trinity Lutheran Church – 517 S. W. Des Moines Street; Ankeny IA). Please feel free to bring a food item to share with everyone if you would like. You will also need to bring whatever you need in order to sew as we will not be able to provide power strips or extension cords, etc. Please let me know what questions you have. It is sure to be a great time.
