Happy Holidays everyone! I trust you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and are getting into the Christmas spirit.

Congrats to the Hawkeyes and Cyclones for their upcoming bowl appearances.

As you know the December guild meeting will be our traditional potluck. Yummy food!  For the second year we will have a Dutch auction where all members present can bid on items that another member has donated for the auction. One item that I know will be going to the highest bidder is a Sidewinder (bobbin winder) and 25 spools of thread! Imagine what you can do with all of that!

In January, Jan Patek will be our speaker. She is from Cameron, Missouri and designs quilt patterns. She will have patterns for sale at the meeting. Jan has been a vendor at the Des Moines show since AQS became involved in the show.

In February, Stephanie Brandenburg from Fern Hill – Amana Colonies – will be our speaker. On February 11, 2012 we will have a workshop with Shelly Burge of Lincoln, Nebraska. The first 20 people who sign up will learn about “String Piecing.” The cost is $25 (plus your meal) and sign up forms will be available at the December and January meetings.

Enjoy the holidays, eat something you shouldn’t, and have a safe new year!

August Program brings Glimpse of World of Bloomin’ Minds

Posted in Programs on August 10th, 2011

Lynn Doyle, of Bloomin’ Minds Designs in Council Bluffs charmed and entertained us with her trunk show of delightfully whimsical designs–and the stories behind them.  Who can forget the inspiration behind her “Silvery Moon” design?  And how about those ice cream coupons her husband, Mike (a Blue Bunny rep) donated for door prizes!  She is a self-described “fabri-holic” who traces her love of sewing and fabric back to her 4-H days.  Many of us could relate, but how many of us still have our 4-H Record Book?!   She studied  Art Education and has worked in many fabric and quilt shops.  One of her last jobs was to order fabric and patterns, which transitioned into designing her own pattern line “Bloomin’ Minds”.   Many quilters take the summer off from sewing and quilting, and we gleefully welcomed the fall quilting season by purchasing from the huge selection of patterns and kits that Lynn and her husband Mike brought for us.

August program will blow your “bloomin’ minds”

Posted in Programs on July 31st, 2011

Join us on August 9 for program and trunk show by Lynn Doyle of Bloomin’ Minds.   Lynn’s seasonal designs define “light-hearted” and “whimsical”.  We have scheduled her program for late in the year as most of her designs are for autumn/winter holidays–Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas.  Lynn will have patterns and kits for sale so you can get a start on your holiday projects.  See her designs at bloominminds.com.  Join Lynn for an early supper before Guild at Okoboji Grill at 5:00 PM.

“Pink” June Program, look forward to rest of summer programs

Posted in Programs on July 17th, 2011

Tula Pink entertained and informed us at the June 14 meeting.  Tula (yes, that’s her real name) is an exciting young graphic artist and fabric designer who has worked in everything from museums to the rock music industry. She says that fabric and sewing have been a constant in her life and calls herself “an exiled rock princess on a throne of bolts and bobbins”.  She credits her Mom with her entry into fabric design as she gave her the gentle nudge to pursue her options.  During her free time while she was working for Capital Records Tula began drawing fabric lines.  We are so glad she did.  Her collections are delightful.  Her first email sent to Moda fabrics resulted in her fabric line being in production 36 hours later.  What a wonderful gift she has.  She and her mother own a fabric shop in Stewartsville, Missouri.  Her latest line is Prince Charming.  It is being produced through Westminster Fibers.  We all enjoyed her stories of the fabric line as well as the hidden animals in some of the prints.

Don’t miss the rest of our summer programs with the July 19 “QuiltFest Wrap-up” and our last program of this program year on August 9 with “Bloomin’ Minds” applique artist Lynn Doyle.

Annemarie Yohnk presents Redwork in the Beginning

Posted in Programs on April 13th, 2011

Annemarie Yohnk, Minnesota author, designer and quilter, presented a stunning trunk show April 12 of antique redwork quilts from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She entertained us with well-researched stories about the owners and makers of these wonderful pieces as well as tales of her own antics at the sales and auctions where she purchased them. We learned that “redwork” can be blue, black, yellow or pink. Annemarie has a long-arm quilting business, The Quilted Sandwich, as well as Quilts Remembered, her own line of redwork and pieced quilt patterns. Quilts Remembered patterns are available coast to coast and in several foreign countries. Visit Annemarie’s website at quiltsremembered.com

Amazing Art Quilts shown at March meeting

Posted in Programs on March 9th, 2011

Sue Kluber challenged and amazed us with her awesome array of art quilts at the March meeting.  Her favorite technique is collage and raw edge applique–ask about her “cheater flying geese”.   She creates fabric from what most of us throw away–threads and snippets of fabric.  She says “I pay for every inch of fabric and thread and I’m going to use every inch!”  She layers fabric, traps “stuff” under tulle or organza, and adds incredible quilting.   Many of her pieces feature painted features, mostly faces and animals.

Sue and her husband farm near Guernsey, Iowa.  They both love nature and animals and that is reflected in her work.  Sue was an artist before she was a quilter and developed her techniques because she couldn’t find the fabrics she wanted.  She is self-taught and credits her skills to unique and  fortunate exposure to drawing and art all during her childhood, including a Grant Wood-trained high school art teacher.

There are still a few slots available for Sue’s workshop Saturday, March 12.  Call Sharon Lesan for information at 954-5608 or sharonlesan@yahoo.com

“Embellish!!” your world in March

Posted in Programs on March 2nd, 2011
Sue Kluber, noted Iowa art quilter, will be our March speaker.  She will present “Embellish!!” and show us how to use “arty” techniques to embellish our own quilts.  (She will not be able to get to Ankeny in time to join us for Supper with the Speaker.)  Remember to bring your own embellished or art quilts for our themed Show-and-Tell.
Sue will also be doing a workshop on Embellishing on Saturday, March 12. We have had a couple of cancellations, so can take a few more registrations. Cost is $25 plus a $12 supply pack paid to the instructor.
On Saturday, March 19, Cathy Wierzbicki will be doing a workshop on Pineapple Nine-Patch.  Cost is $25 plus the cost of her book “Geometric Gems” ($18.99) for the large project.  Cathy is giving free the patterns for the smaller projects and can take more registrations as long as you can get the supplies and complete the cutting homework.
Call Sharon Lesan at 965-5608 or sharonlesan@yahoo.com to register and get the supply lists for either workshop.  All workshops are 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM in room 200 of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 517 SW Des Moines St in Ankeny.

March workshop update

Posted in Programs on February 23rd, 2011

March is a wonderful month for AAQG workshops.   On Saturday, March 12, Sue Kluber will present an all-day workshop on embellishing.  This workshop was closed last week because Sue needs extra time to prepare the super supply packet.  HOWEVER, we have had a couple of cancellations and can take a few more.  Call Sharon Lesan at 965-5608 or email at sharonlesan@yahoo.com if you are interested.

On Saturday, March 19, Cathy Wierzbicki will present an all-day workshop on Pineapple Nine Patch.  Cathy is willing to take registration right up to the last minute.  Her book, Geometric Gems ($18.99) is required for the large quilt project and you can either purchase it before hand or get it from her at the workshop.  As a special bonus, Cathy is providing patterns FREE if you are interested in one of the smaller projects that were shown at the February meeting.  Copied below are the supply lists for both the large and small projects.

———————————————————————————–

Pineapple Nine Patch Quilt.   Cathy will bring books for those who wish to purchase one.  The book is NOT required for the workshop, but it will be required for those who choose to make the large quilt.  Following is the materials list as printed in the book:

6 yards TOTAL of assorted dark fabrics (recommend about 1/2 yard EACH of 12 different dark fabrics).  This is for blocks and borders.

5 1/2 yards TOTAL of assorted light fabrics (recommend 1/2 yard EACH of 11 fabrics).  This is for blocks and borders.

3/4 yard for binding

8 yards for backing

The finished quilt size is 84” x 97 1/2”

Remember to bring TRI-RECS TOOL…widely available at quilt stores.  Cathy WILL NOT have extras on hand.  The alternative to this is transparent template plastic, but TRI-RECS is easier to work with.

Also, bring a regular ruler for cutting strips.

Sewing machine

Rotary cutter and mat

Iron

Basic sewing kit that a quilter needs at any sewing event.

Pineapple Table Toppers

She will give a copy of the three patterns to everyone who attends, whether they have the book or not.  These projects use some, but not all, of the elements from the large quilt.  Attendees should bring the same equipment mentioned above, but less fabric.  How much less is hard for me to say since I don’t know which project(s) they will choose to make.  However, in broad strokes, the following fabric list should be enough for all 3 of the small projects.

From dark fabrics, bring a scrappy assortment of strips that are at least 6 3/4” wide, plus inner and outer border strips…2 yards total should be enough.  Figure about 1/2 yard x width of fabric for outer borders.

From light fabrics, bring a scrappy assortment of strips that are also at least
6 3/4” wide, plus a couple strips 1 1/2” wide which is required of just one of the projects.   1 yard should be enough.

“Applique After Hours” featured at Feb. meeting

Posted in Programs on February 9th, 2011

Angela Lawrence enchanted us with her needle-turn applique designs and quilts at February’s meeting. Angela talked about the long history of women doing handwork, usually in the company of other women, and of her own quilting journey born in a Minneapolis quilt shop. She showed us her stunning quilts, frequently in cheerful bright colors, and often embellished with embroidery and beading.

Her pattern design business “Applique After Hours”, acknowledges what most busy women know–lots of creative quilting takes place “after hours”, when other responsibilities have been met. Her original designs can be found on her website appliqueafterhours.com and at area quilt shops.

Angela will be teaching an all-day workshop Saturday, Feb. 12 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny.

Angela Lawrence, applique artist for Feb.

Angela Lawrence brings “Adventures in Applique” to us at our February 8 meeting. Angela is a gifted applique artist, based at Creekside Quilting, who teaches widely. Many “Best of Show” winners with applique credit Angela for teaching them their skills.

Join Angela for an early supper before the meeting, 5:00 pm, at Okoboji Grill. Everyone’s welcome; please contact Sharon Lesan at 965-5608 or sharonlesan@yahoo.com if you would like to join the group.

There is still time to sign up for Angela’s workshop on Saturday, February 12 from 9:00-3:00 in room 200 of HTLC. Please see Sharon Lesan at Tuesday’s guild meeting or contact her at 965-5608 or sharonlesan@yahoo.com for more information.

Husbands featured in January program

Posted in Programs on January 12th, 2011

Our speakers’ husbands were prominent in our January program “Best of Show”. Linda McGhee’s husband came with her for the first time in the 15 years that she has belonged to AAQG. Linda (who said she would rather show than talk) showed a number of quilts that traced her quilt journey beginning with an adorable doll quilt made for her as a child. She also talked about her AAQG Best of Show quilt “Home Sweet Home”. Linda encouraged members to find a small group and strongly supported workshops. She told us how much she spends on workshops (at which point she wondered if she should have brought her husband!) Oh, and ask her about her “sick quilt”.

Mary Martin’s husband was responsible for the background fabric of the stunning applique quilt “Riley’s Garden” that won Best of Show at the Iowa State Fair. He so liked the “awful” lavender Christmas fabric with gold threads that she bought five yards so as not to hurt his feelings (and so he would continue to stop at every quilt shop in the country!) The fabric turned out to be perfect for the batiks she chose for “Riley’s Garden”, which was also juried into the 2011 Lancaster AQS show. Mary also showed another beautiful applique quilt that was featured in the AQS Calendar. Mary credited Angela Lawrence for her inspiration and encouraged everyone to take Angela’s AAQG workshop on Sat. Feb 12.

“Best of Show” is January program

Posted in Programs on January 10th, 2011

Join us at 7:00 PM on Tues. Jan 11 for our program “Best of Show”. Linda McGhee, Mary Martin and Joan Naylor, all of whom have won “Best of Show” at area quilt shows will show their winning quilts and talk about their quilting journey. If you would like to join the speakers for supper at 5:00 before the meeting at Yanni’s at 401 S Ankeny Blvd, call Sharon at 965-5608 or sharonlesan@yahoo.com

December program

Posted in Programs on November 16th, 2010

Wasn’t Edie McGinnis great at our November meeting?  All those feedsacks!   All those stories!

We won’t have a speaker at our December meeting and potluck, but watch for more information from President Louise on the “Dutch auction” that she announced last meeting (proceeds going to AAQG).   I believe that there will be prizes awarded for the item going for the highest amount!   This is a great chance to invite your friends to come to do some Christmas shopping and bid up YOUR auction item!
