Edie McGinnis is November speaker

Posted in Programs on November 9th, 2010

Tonight’s speaker is Edie McGinnis, from the Kansas City Star, presenting “Feedsacks:  Out of the Barnyard and into the Bedroom”.  There is still time to sign up for supper with her at 5:00 PM at Chips Restaurant.  Contact Sharon at 965-5608 or sharonlesan@yahoo.com so we’ll have a large enough table.  Remember that our themed show-and-tell is in addition to our regular show-and-tell, so we’ll look forward to seeing all your completed projects as well as “Edie-themed” items like feedsacks, Kansas City Star patterns, etc.

Edie McGinnis will be our program presenter on November 9 with “Feedsacks: Out of the Barnyard and into the Bedroom”.  Edie is a Kansas City Star author and editor who has written over a dozen quilt books.  She speaks widely at national and regional meetings and I have it on good authority that she is a hoot!  You won’t want to miss it.  Don’t forget to bring any feedsack quilts or quilts made from Kansas City Star patterns for Show and Tell.

If you want to join Edie for supper at 5:00 at Chips Restaurant (dutch treat), contact Sharon Lesan so we’ll know how big a table to reserve.  sharonlesan@yahoo.com or 965-5608

Thanks to Clare O’Donohue

Thanks to Clare O’Donohue, who was our speaker at the October meeting. Clare is a quilter, former TV producer of Alex Anderson’s “Simply Quilts” (and an impressive number of other TV shows) and author of the “Everyday Quilts” series of quilt-related murder mysteries. She regaled us with tales of her work as a TV producer and as a writer and charmed us as she described her efforts to capture the “spirit of quilters” in her books. Beaverdale Books was at the meeting and made her three books (Lover’s Knot, Drunkard’s Path and Double Cross) available for purchase. Clare is currently working on a new series of mysteries featuring a TV producer.

Get the inside scoop at our October 12 program. Clare is a quilter. And a TV producer. She merged these two skills in her job as the producer of Alex Anderson’s HGTV program “Simply Quilts”. She is also a the author of the Everyday Quilts mystery series. As with all our speakers, Clare will have her books available for purchase. If you would like join Clare for supper before the Guild meeting at 5:00 PM at Yanni’s (order from menu, pay own ticket) call or email Sharon Lesan 965-5608 sharonlesan@yahoo.com.

And don’t forget to bring any quilts that represent our speaker for Show and Tell–any mystery quilts, or one that has blocks with the names of her books (Lover’s Knot, Double Cross, Drunkard’s Path). Along with your regular Show and Tell items, of course.

September program

Don’t miss our September program with designer/quilter/teacher Cathy Wierzbicki. Cathy is a former Ankeny resident and AAQG member who has “made it big” on the West Coast. She has been featured in magazines, done on-line TV segments and taught coast to coast at small venues, large international shows and a Caribbean cruise. She has had 5 books published and countless patterns, and developed the All-In-One Ruler and The Quilter’s Boot.

Her quilts capture moods that run the gamut from serene and charming to tongue-in-cheek whimsy. You can see her designs on her website “timetoquilt.com”

Cathy says “Quilting has changed my life & done so for countless others. Whether you are a novice or an experienced quilter, or whether you approach this craft on a small scale or are a dedicated quilter, it matters not. There is so much to be learned, to be shared and to be enjoyed by quilters of all skill levels. I hope you, too, will discover that the fabric of your life has been enriched by those around you, and may you always take “Time to Quilt”

Cathy returns to her Ankeny roots on Tuesday, September 14 at 7:00 PM with her program “Returning to Square One”. The Ankeny Area Quilt Guild meets in Fellowship Hall at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 517 Des Moines Street in Ankeny.

Thank You from Gloria Hall

Upcoming Programs

Hear quilt historian Gloria Hall in August

On August 10th join us for Gloria Hall’s lecture “Every Woman Has A Story 1800-1990″ and trunk show.  Bonnie Kucera will assist with the program. The reverse chronology trunk show and lecture travels through nearly 200 years of quilting, beginning in 1990 and traveling backward in time to 1800. The quilts are presented by decade, noting trends in pattern, texture, design, color, piecing techniques, and quilting. Gloria intersperses her presentation with
vignettes and stories inspired by her treasures that challenge her audience to contemplate and appreciate the lives of the women who created the works of art in her care.

Enjoy dinner with Gloria Hall & Bonnie Kucera at Yanni’s, 410 S. Ankeny Blvd, Ankeny, 5:00 P.M., Tuesday August 10. Please let Pam Messer, ela.messer@gmail.com or 515-220-4240, know if you are planning to attend so that the right amount of space is reserved.
