2012 Quiltfest – Window to the East

Posted in Quilt Show on October 13th, 2011

Presents:

Window to the East

2012 Quilt Show

SHOW DATES:  July 6th and 7th – At Faith Baptist Bible College.

Important note this is the weekend before SummerFest.  The College had a conflict that they were not able to accommodate us the weekend of SummerFest.  While this may cause some concerns it may work out better in the long run as Saturday is always a slow day for our show and it might result in more guests attending.  We do plan to increase advertising on this to get the word out.

This year’s quilt show will be our 21st Anniversary and in celebration of that milestone we wanted a theme that would encompass all the things that allow us to continue to grow as quilters.  The guidelines for this year’s theme are simple to come up with something that represents your Window to the East.  We would like to see Japanese inspired fabrics but other than that let your creativity flow.  The overall design does not have to be Japanese.

We would like to offer to you five events to help you through your decision process.  We have set-up five Friday night sew dates to be held at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 517 SW Des Moines Street, Ankeny, Iowa from 6:00 pm to 11:00 pmThe dates are  October 14th, November 11th, January 13th, February 17th and March 16thWe are also working with our local quilt shops to see if they would like to sponsor one of our sew dates.   Quilting Connection in Ames will be sponsoring our first sew date in November.  They will be featuring a new project and have some items available for purchase.  There will be no charge to these events all we ask is that you bring anything and everything that you need to work on your projects.  That would include extension cords, irons, general sewing tools and other materials.   Also if you want to bring something to eat to share that is also being encouraged since most quilters do better with nourishment.   Depending on turn out we would encourage you to invite a friend.  Maybe you have a friend that has been thinking about joining the guild but haven’t yet, invite them along.   As quilters we enjoy getting input from other quilters so don’t be afraid to bounce ideas off of all of us or even if you want to try something new don’t be afraid to ask how to get started.  The main purpose of these Friday Night sew dates is just to relax, have some fun and let the creative energy flow.   So we can have some idea of who will be attending we would like for you take a moment and complete the signup sheet.  Be certain to bring everything that you need to sew as nothing will be provided.  We strongly encourage you bring surge protectors and extension cords as the outlets can be far from the tables and we have been asked by the church not to move the tables.  Thanks for your corporation on this.

In years past our vendors and sponsors have been extremely generous in donating some wonderful items and at this point we have not received nor made any requests for donations from sponsors or vendors.  We are planning to work in conjunction with the Directors at Large and the Retreat Show Chair to limit our multiple requests for donations.

 Drop Off

We are looking at various options for drop off points for quilts.  As in the past we ask that you have your quilts labeled and placed in a pillowcase and/or garage bag for their protection.  We can’t guarantee that you will receive your pillowcase back so PLEASE do use heirloom pillow cases.  We do not want to be responsible for this item.  Thank you.

Color Outside the Lines – Is this year’s quilt show theme.

Posted in Quilt Show on October 13th, 2010

Ankeny Area Quilter’s Guild
Presents: Color Outside the Lines
2011 Quilt Show

This year’s quilt show will be our 20th Anniversary and in celebration of that milestone we wanted a theme that would encompass all the things that allow us to continue to grow as quilters. The guidelines for this year’s theme, to Color Outside the Lines means we need to give ourselves permission to do something that we might not otherwise try to do. What that is will be different for each and every one of us. All we ask is that you try something new. That something new for you might be paper piecing, appliqué, a contemporary style design, maybe your own original design; whatever it is try to approach it like you were picking up colors for the first time and let your creativity take you to a whole new place. We realize that the lack of specific directions may make some feel a little bit uncertain and we would like to offer to you three events to help you through your decision process.

We have set-up three Friday night sew dates to be held at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 517 SW Des Moines Street, Ankeny, Iowa from 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm. The dates are November 12th, January 14th, and March 18th. We are also working with our local quilt shops to see if they would like to sponsor one of our sew dates.

SATURDAY, JULY 9TH, 2011 – JOANN BELLING
JoAnn has enjoyed the sewing machine since she began producing her own clothes at age 12. In 1965 she began quilting with heavy polyester fabrics and no formal instruction. Encouraged by a friend she enrolled in classes in 1977 and has designed numerous quilts and wall hangings. She has taught a variety of classes in United States and Japan. Her influence in quilting has been felt from coast to coast. The Belling household has hosted a number of quilt groups for lectures and tours. Her finest work has been reproduced in national publications. JoAnn has received Best of Show and other ribbons on her quilts at the Iowa State Fair and other competitions. A total of 9 quilts have hung at Paducah as well as other national quilt shows. The Quilt Room at Hotel Pattee, Perry, Iowa, is the site for “My Jacobean Garden”. Concepts of color and composition which JoAnn uses in her photographic art are applied to the designing of quilts, borders and quilt back art. All phases of quilting are enjoyed by JoAnn but of greatest interest are the color and design portion. Planning and short cut methods are discussed. Organization in her dream sewing room gives you an insight to the reason JoAnn is able to create a number of quilt works each year.

Enjoy using the equilateral triangle while making triangles, split triangles, diamonds and split diamonds. Color choice, usage and placement in your art piece will all be discussed. Fussy cutting adds humor and individuality. Fusible and machine appliqué scraps in the border complete the whimsy. All fees paid will reserve your spot for this workshop. A supply list will be provided once fees have been paid. This class will not be cancelled.

VOLUNTEERS
A successful quilt show does not happen without volunteers and in conjunction with our 20th Anniversary we wanted a different way to recognize our volunteers. For those individuals that sign up for two shifts will receive an Anniversary pin free; for those that sign up for three shifts they will receive a tote free and for those that sign up for four or more shifts will receive the pin and tote free. We will also be selling these two items for purchase as well. And for everyone that volunteer their names will go into a hat for a gift certificate to a local quilt shop.

September Begins a new Guild Year

Posted in Quilt Show on September 13th, 2010

September brings the start of a new Guild Year and after doing the math, did you know that we will be celebrating our 20th Anniversary as the Ankeny Area Quilters’ Guild? To get things rolling does anyone know when we held our very first Quilt Show? Does anyone know what the theme was and where it was held?? How many Members participated? What ‘special’ thing was allowed to be hung in this quilt show??

For answer to these questions and information on the 2011 Quilt show; please attend the October 12th guild meeting. At that time the raffle show information will be rolled out and hopefully, all your questions will be answered.
