Our September board meeting will be held at Kim Manthe's home on Thursday, September 7, at 6:30 pm. The address is: 4005 NE Tulip Lane, Ankeny, IA. (Note the address change - Long Story) All 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 board members should attend. Please bring your notebooks and plan to spend approximately three hours. This is the longest meeting of the year due to the amount of business to get through. If you need directions, call Kim at 515-491-2647 or email her at kmm0901@hotmail.com. Last year's board members that are not holding a position this year should only plan to attend for approximately 30 minutes.
Meetings are held at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny.
Have you ever felt you needed motivated to finish your UFO's, resolutions or you needed an extra push or encouragement to finish resolutions & projects? We have signed up for us motivational speaker, Debi Garner. She's a professional who works with companies to boost employees' performance. She'll coach us back on track.
Treats will be provided by the new board members.
The fat-quarter lottery for September is: Black &White's.
Hi everyone. I can't believe September is here already! The past couple of months have been a whirlwind for me. A new grandson born in June, Quilt Show in July, and moving to a new town home in August. September looks to be busy, too but in a different way. I have yet to meet with the 2006-2007 board members but our first meeting will be packed with regular business and then on to the new ideas and fun stuff alot of us have been discussing. One of the things we definitely want to do is update the donation quilt pattern. I've been working on two designs—one that is really fast and easy to make and perfect for beginning quilters or those of us with extremely busy schedules and one that's a bit more challenging but still quick. Both patterns will be available in October. We have also talked about eliminating the fat quarter lottery and replacing it with a block exchange or 2'' strips or just something different. Other ideas we've thrown around are a postcard club, a quilted purse contest, and as a Christmas project, making quilted totes instead of stockings and filling them with a small gift or two. All of these ideas and many more will be ironed out and finalized at our Sept. board meeting so that we can share more in October. I'm really am looking forward to this year and can't wait to get things started.

Board Meeting, 8/01/06
Present: Gloria R., Sherrie J., Marlene D., Linda S., Celeste M., Denette S., Kay H., Susan B., Sammy P., Kris B., Kim M., Jenna I., Charlotte S. Minutes read and approved for June, because there was no meeting or board meeting for July. T-shirts will be for sale at the August meeting and September meeting. 83 of the 100 T-shirts have been sold so far. We are still looking for a Quilt Show Chair Elect and Secretary. At the meeting next week an announcement will be made to ask for nominations for any position, then the slate of officers will be voted on by members. Pink and White quilts is set for Sept. 30. The board talked about ideas of what we could do. We will bring patterns to Sept. Board meeting that would be easy enough for any level quilter to make and the guild members who are interested could make blocks or tops. Suitcases and donation quilts should be brought to the Aug. meeting. The comments about Quilt Show have been very positive. Great location and Faith Baptist was a good facility. Good layout and everyone enjoyed the speakers. All expenses need to be in to Sammy ASAP. Marlene explained the posters made and donated by Staples that will be set up at each meeting announcing that night's speaker/program and the next months. She will continue to keep in touch with Ricky Timms. He only does Regional programs so it would have to be a joint effort with other guilds or shops to arrange a program with him. Next Board Meeting, Sept.7th. Kris will planning budget.

AAQG Guild Meeting, 8/20/06
With 80 members present, Jenna I. opened the meeting by reading a Thank You from Hospice in Johnston for the pink and white quilt donated. Also a Thank You from Katherine Litwinow for having her speak at our meeting this Spring. She also announced Shop Hops that are coming up for our area. Joan Maust showed the special quilt given to her dated around 1830 and appraised at $5600.00. Gloria Ross was given the Mary Conkel Award for this year. A motion was made and seconded to accept the slate of board positions for 2006-2007 as announced. (See elsewhere in newsletter). Kim Manthe updated us on Pat Lucas, from Algona, Heartland Quilt Shop, who has breast cancer. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers. Pat's address is in this newsletter if you would like to send her a note. Marlene D. spoke about our motivational speaker for September meeting, Debi Garner. The poster on display announcing our meeting for each month has been provided by Staples. A Thank You to Staples. Keep them in mind for your office needs. Jenna gave a quick little talk about her road trip to Kansas City, to see fabric designer Amy Butler at Harper's in Overland Park, KS, Quilt Store.
Kris introduced the Quilt Show Committee and thanked them for all their help and support and hard work to make our show a success. Rose Renhart was there to get her sewing machine as door prize winner. The Raffle Quilt was won Vicki Derhart and was on its way to Vancouver with JoAnn DaMoss. We awarded prizes for our quilt show winners and they had their pictures taken for the Ankeny-Press Citizen. Prizes were drawn and given to volunteers at the Quilt Show and certificates were given out for those participating on the resolution list. Show and Tell followed, then refreshments.

These minutes were re-written at Mercy Hospital while we were waiting for our grandchild to be born. Aug. 19th, Griffin Thomas Meyer arrived at 2.23 PM, 7 lbs. 1 oz. OH, BOY!

These new stamps showcase ten quilts created between circa 1940 and 2001 by African-American women in Gee's Bend, Alabama.
Noted for their unexpected color combinations, bold patterns, and improvised designs, the quilts of Gee's Bend are also remarkable for the humble materials with which they are made. Necessity limited the quilters to fabric from everyday items such as flour sacks, old dresses, and worn-out denim and flannel work clothes. Stains, mended holes and tears, faded patches, and seams all became integral parts of a quilt's design.
You may want to ask for these interesting stamps at the Post Office. We thought they were just what the newsletter needed!
I have several boxes of fabric that have been donated to me and I would like to pass it along to someone that can use it. This is all sorts of fabric from sweatshirt fabric to polyester blends to double knits to weavers cloth. If anyone knows anyone that could use this please let me know and I will make arrangements for them to get this. I have about 5 boxes of fabric. Below is a portion of correspondence we've received so far from Ricky Tims. Note how we might look forward to Ricky appearing within our 'region' rather than for our guild, as is his new format. We've followed through with a message to 'Pat' by placing our name on a waiting list. In addition, we've given a copy of this letter and a request for feedback to many quilt shops, guilds and professionals statewide in the hope that others may also have interest toward scheduling a seminar from Ricky.

Dear Marlene,
Thank you so much for your interest in having me come to teach at your guild. If it has been a while since your request, please accept my apologies. My schedule over the past year has been unusually hectic and we have been making some significant changes in the focus of our company and considering more efficient ways to teach. I wish I could be cloned, but alas, I can't, so the need to reevaluate has been very important. I am grateful that so many of you appreciate my work and have kept me so busy. I have made quite a few changes in the way I teach in an effort to offer exciting and innovative classes and lectures that reach as many students as possible while limiting my time on the road, which will provide much needed creative time. And there will be more new things coming in the future as I work on developing new classes and more effective ways of teaching. The remainder of 2006 is fully booked with personal commitments and seminars, and I am beginning to look at potential commitments for 2007 in addition to scheduling the 2-day Ricky Tims Quilt Seminars. I am attaching my fee schedule for 2007 that covers traditional workshops and my newer lecture/demo format presentations for you to consider. If your guild would like to consider a cost-free way to bring me to your region, please contact Pat for more information on my 2-day seminars or visit my website at www.rickytims.com (click on Seminars and you'll find information on seminar content and student feedback. These seminars have been so well received around the country over the last two years, and I have been able to teach hundreds of quilters in 2 days of fun, laughter and learning. The seminar costs your guild nothing but there is a good amount of pre-seminar legwork and the need for a committed volunteer work force during the seminar. Upon your request, Pat can provide you with all of the particular seminar information that you will need to put in a formal request for a seminar in your area.
With the seminar format, I would not be coming to YOUR guild, but rather YOUR region. In return, the guild receives financial rewards based on the total number of registrations. It's a win-win for the guild, its members and the quilting community. I hope you'll explore its possibilities with me. Seminars are limited in availability and are determined in most cases by geographical location.
