The next board meeting will be Tuesday, May 1, 2007, 6:30 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny. Please note, we are back to our old meeting time.
This month has become a real favorite! It's fun to participate, but it's equally fun to witness all the different interpretations of the chosen theme —a glimpse of paradise. Don't miss our "Challenge 2007" to vote your favorite! We will also hold our "Quilting Treasures" Sale at the May meeting.

We've been asking members for nominations for the Mary Conkel Award which will be given at our May meeting.

May should be an exciting and busy month for all of us. Our challenge quilt contest is this month! We are having our first ever Quilting Treasures sale during our May meeting! And it's only two months until the quilt show! It's time to get those entry forms completed. Even if your entry isn't quite done yet, we still need the form! It's also time for us to get those gardens and flowers planted. May your May be filled with fresh spring flowers, fresh new fabric, family and friendship.

The door prize winners were: Marianne Lorenz and Candy Watkins. Deb Pierschbacher won the block of the month lottery.
Did you pick up your ticket pack at the April meeting? More tickets will be available at the May meeting. The prize for selling the most raffle tickets is the MegaQuilter donated by The Quilting Connection in Ames.
Tips and Techniques will meet, May 15th, and then break for the summer months. The topic will be announced at the guild meeting.
Board Meeting, 4/3/07
Attended by Kim, Denette, Susan, Linda, Charlotte and Kay. Minutes read and approved. Tips and Techniques for May will be supervised by Linda S. as Jenna will be OOT. There will be no Dec. potluck next year. Jenna is working on a program for that night. Quilting Treasure items that do not sell will be donated elsewhere at the discretion of the Board. Two places considered were Mitchellville Women's Prison and Creekside's new quilters program. 57 donation quilts have been collected so far plus 5 fleece blankets. A bus trip to see Ricky Timms and Alex Anderson, Aug. 17, 18, and 19 is being checked out. More info later. Susan brought up the possibility of raising the ad fee. Spring Retreat was a great weekend, SHORT on sleep, LONG on fun! Raffle Quilt is at Quilters Cupboard. Tickets available starting at April meeting with entry forms.

AAQG Guild Meeting, 4/10/07
Kim called the meeting to order and introduced new members and guests. Raffle tickets available tonight—see Joyce at her table. Please remember to pick yours up at the May or June meetings. Quilting Connection is donating a "Mega-Quilter" for most Raffle Tickets sold. Mary Conkel Award vote starts tonight. Paducah is coming to Des Moines in Oct. 2008. Good article in Des Moines Register. Donation kits are available. Challenge projects due next month (May). "Quilt Pink" quilts are now on E-Bay. Country Store items are being accepted now and will be until the Quilt Show. 35 attended this years Retreat and had a fabulous time with friends, fabric and fun--they even DANCED! Quilting Treasure sale is next month along with our challenge. Tips and Techniques for April is mitered borders. One more meeting in May (3rd Tues.) then off for the summer. Judy Martin had an inspirational trunk show with her beautiful quilts. Show and Tell and refreshments ended the evening.

The quilt show is just around the corner but there is still time to make your donation quilt and item for the Country Store. Kim Manthe challenged each guild member to make a donation quilt this year. We had 57 donation quilts and 5 fleece blankets donated by the start of the April meeting. If you haven't made a donation quilt there is still time--remember we are donating to both Children and Families of Iowa AND ChildServe this year.
Please help by donating something wonderful to our Country Store! Right now, we are pretty low on items. Remember, it's the money made from Country Store that help pays for future programs and workshops. For each item you donate your name goes in a drawing for a prize.
A big THANKYOU to those that have donated to these projects! We appreciate all the time and generosity that goes into each and every donated item. It really does take all of us to make these projects work!
We have had several guild members tell us that they enjoyed the "Mystery Quilt" series in the newsletter. A new "Mystery Quilt" series will begin soon—it's also by Judy Hopkins and called "Golden Oldie".

American Patchwork & Quilting is proud to announce The Quilt Pink Charity Auction to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure. This six-month auction campaign launched April 5, 2007. It will feature weekly auctions, beginning each Thursday, totaling nearly 4,000 handmade quilts that showcase the talent and hope of quilters to unite in supporting a cure for breast cancer.

You have a poor quality needle. Use good-quality, polished steel needles.
Pulling the fabric as you sew puts stress on the needle and bends it out of place.
The needle is installed incorrectly. Check your manual and make sure it is inserted properly.
The needle is too delicate for the fabric. Use heavy-gauge needles for sewing heavier fabrics like denim or leather.
You hit a pin. If possible, don't sew over pins. Pin so they don't pass through the presser foot or remove them as fabric passes under the foot.
The presser foot is loose. This will cause the needle to hit the foot and bend. There should be a screw with which you can tighten the foot.
The needle plate is loose. Make sure it is secured tightly.

I went to a new "store" today (I mean, Becky Larson's quilting/redwork/machine sale!) Becky has always had this "shop local" motto and I was thrilled to hear she was having a sale!

This reporter got to the sale a little late (I was trying to get my family out the door before I went to her sale— and they just weren't moving very fast!) but there was still a lot of great items left!
Busy shoppers
I did miss a kit with all the redwork done, just needing those blocks to be put into the quilt, and another quilt mostly pieced just waiting for the redwork blocks—just my luck! But I found other kits, books, fabrics, etc.—I was happy.

Becky's closet has been legendary in her small group. We love to see what she pulls out next. To be able to own some of it was a dream come true! (Don't tell my husband, but I got quite a lot of dream!) She also had some quilts for sale—she does such beautiful work! —and her miniature sewing machines!

Becky even prepared snacks for her grateful patrons! It was a great one-day shop! You may want to call Becky to see if there's anything left from her sale. It's worth it!

Just want to make sure all our guild members know about the quilt convention in Des Moines, October 8-11, 2008.
The American Quilter's Society convention will be held at the Iowa Events Center and they are planning for 20,000 quilters to attend this event.
