The next board meeting will be Tuesday, June 5, 2007, 6:30 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny.
Ok, so you're still dreaming of owning a long arm quilting machine/frame someday! Dan Terrill, of Nolting Quilting Systems will have his system at our meeting for us to try before we buy. This system just might be the one that fits your needs and the pocket book. Attend this meeting to find out!
June treats will be provided by: Anne Kruse, Deb Pierschbacher and hopefully more!
Each year our guild awards a very special honor, the Mary Conkel Award. It is awarded to a member who generously volunteers their time and talent to the guild and shares their knowledge and enthusiasm for quilting.
Congratulations to the 2007 winner, Linda Schlenker! We will have more about Linda in the July newsletter.
It's hard to believe we are already halfway through 2007. Our quilt show is almost here and I've been busy getting my entries completed. I can't wait to see all of the quilts hanging in the show! I am always amazed at the amount of talent we, as a guild, have. It is mind-blowing. Speaking of talent, I mentioned at last month's meeting that we are looking for volunteers to join our Board of Directors next year. We have several openings and I'm hoping many of you will consider running for a position. Each position comes with a handy, dandy notebook filled with lots of invaluable information describing what the duties are and what is expected. And if you feel you can't devote all of your time to the position, please consider co-chairing with a friend. It really boils down to just one extra meeting plus a few extra hours each month to work on the specifics of your position. Here's a very brief break down of the responsibilities for all positions available for the 2007-2008 year (Sept - Aug):
President—schedules and presides over the board meetings, schedules and presides over the guild meetings, handles any situations that may arise, contributes to the monthly newsletter.
Vice President—fills in for the President in absence of a board or gu lid meeting, keeps track of and stores all of the donation quilts, organizes sewing days and cuts and organizes donation quilt kits, contributes to the monthly newsletter.
Treasurer—is responsible for keeping track of all guild income and expenses and provides reports to the guild on a monthly basis, is keeper of our guild checkbook, applies for raffle quilt license and insurance for quilt show venue, and checks the PO Box on a regular basis. Works with the Communication Editors to keep a current list of all past and present members.
Retreat Chair-elect—works with the current Retreat Chair planning and organizing our annual retreat.
Program Chair-elect—works with the current Program Chair planning and organizing speakers and workshops for current and future months/years.
Director-at-Large-elect—works with the current Director-at-Large planning monthly extras (block exchanges, refreshments, challenge contest, etc.)
Quilt Show Chair—organizes our annual quilt show - schedules quilt show meetings, heads the quilt show committee, oversees all aspects of the quilt show, including, but not limited to: acquiring a contract between the guild and the quilt show venue and a contract with Freeman's Decorating.
Quilt Show Chair-elect—works with the current Quilt Show Chair planning and organizing the current year's show.
The following are the positions already filled for the upcoming year:
Secretary—Charlotte Stordahl
Retreat Chair—Sharon Hawthorne
Program Chair—Jenna Ingle
Director-at-Large—Diana Weirich
Communications Editors—Celeste Muehlenthaler & Susan Body
I know my descriptions above are very brief and like I said before, there are notebooks to reference and past board members available to give advice on any of these roles. It really is fun, so please, give it some thought, talk with a friend, and consider volunteering or co-volunteering for an open position. We are always looking for new, fresh, creative, and talented people to steer us and since our guild is filled to the brim with talent, this shouldn't be too hard. We do have a few volunteers already, so thank you to those quilters, in advance. I'll have the sign-up sheets available at our June and August meetings. If more than one person (or co-persons) volunteers for the same position, we will vote during our August meeting.
Don't forget, get those quilt show entries in early! We still need country store donations! Sell those raffle tickets! Volunteer! Volunteer! Volunteer! See you at the June 19th meeting!
Continuously quilting,
Kim Manthe
Our thoughts and prayers are with JoAnn Dyer, one of our long-time guild members. Her husband, Chuck, passed away May 10th. We extend our deepest sympathy to JoAnn.
The door prize winners were: Joyce Romick and Cyndee Davis. Kim Manthe won the block of the month lottery.
Karen Spencer, from Pella, will be our speaker on September 11. She will be teaching a hand dyeing workshop on Saturday, September 8 (the weekend before the guild meeting). This is a step by step class on mixing dyes and manipulating fabrics to create colors that are your own. The class fee is $25. Sign-up for the class will be available at the June & August guild meetings. Please contact Jenna Ingle with questions.
We're out of room this month in our paper newsletter—and don't have space for our regular quilt shop ads. They are all available in our web newsletter edition—at www.aaqg.net The newsletters are available under the News & Events link.
