The next board meeting will be Tuesday, August 7, 2007, 6:30 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny.
It's the quilt show wrap-up meeting! Join us for an evening to celebrate a job well done, another successful quilt show! Quilt show prize winners will be announced and other quilt show awards will be presented.
It's not too late to finish up projects on your resolution list. Please bring your remaining completed items to the August meeting — and be sure to get them checked off our master list (see Linda or Diana) before we have the resolution prize drawing.
Let's say THANKS to our out-going President, Kim Manthe! Charlotte Stordahl (secretary) will be collecting fat-quarters— of BATIKS—from our guild members to give to Kim as a thank you gift. Kim will be presented the fat-quarters in a nice gift basket at the September guild meeting. Please bring them to the August or September meeting and give them to Charlotte. THANKS EVERYONE!
I can't believe this year as President is almost over. Where did the time go? I have had so much fun. The group of gals on the board this year were absolutely wonderful to work with. A big thank you to all of you! I hope all of you had a chance to visit our quilt show last month. It was so cool to meet Karen McTavish and listen to her lecture. She sure inspired me! The comments I heard regarding our quilts this year were so nice. Several times people came up to me and said the quilts this year were outstanding. What a compliment to all of us. The vendors all said they had a good weekend and Mike from Tracy's Tables even "bumped up" the cutting table he gave us. Meaning it's the next step up from the one he usually gives us. How cool is that? Amy Westendorf said the folks from ChildServe were so happy and grateful to receive some of our donation quilts. The kids just loved them and they brought smiles to all of their faces. Hats off to all of you that made one or more! And to all the volunteers—wow! A big thank you to all of you! Denette is hard at work planning our August meeting. Look forward to winning some really cool stuff! I know because alot of it is in my trunk! Our August meeting is going to be a lot of fun. Don't miss it. And don't forget to sign up for a workshop or two. A lot of work goes into planning them and we need to fill these classes, gals. New membership forms are available in August too. If you want your birthday included in the membership directory, you must include it on the form each year. Check out the new gallery of pictures. We were able to get "aerial" shots of the quilt show this year and they are posted there. Again, thanks for this past year everyone.
Keep on quiltin'—Kim

FYI—the remaining food from our July quilt show was donated to Bidwell, Riverside Center. This note is from them and explains how they used our donation.
Bidwell Riverside Center, Des Moines Area Religious Council's food pantry serving the Southside of Des Moines, wishes to thank the Ankeny Quilt Guild for their donation of food.
Our clients especially appreciated the hot dogs. We divided the hot dogs into bags of 8 and distributed them to the people who came for food Monday the 16th. We seldom have meat for our clients, so this was quite a treat for them.
All the buns, chips and cookies were a great addition to the staples we hand out to people in need. We used the donated lettuce for a salad, and the leftover beef burgers for our preschool class lunch.
We would like to extend a great big thank you from all the people who received these special treats. They were very much appreciated.
August is a busy month for workshop sign-ups. We are offering three exciting workshops this fall.
#1—This is your last chance to sign up for the hand applique workshops with Thuy Nguyen! Workshops are Friday or Saturday August 24 or 25. There are still places available in both workshops. The cost is $35 for one day.

#3—Joan Oberfoelle is coming from Dubuque to teach us how to make one of a kind designer jackets/vests. Check out the samples at the August meeting!
Please see Jenna Ingle at the August meeting to check out of all these great workshops and bring your checkbook!
Join Karen Spencer at our guild meeting on Tuesday, September 11th. She will be sharing her 25+ years of quilting experience and talking about techniques such as fabric dyeing and discharge. 2007-2008 Membership FormCathy Dimit recently showed some snuggles at a guild meeting. Cathy and her daughter made them as a Girl Scout project. They were adorable and so practical and make a wonderful donation item. What are they? Snuggles are a small blankets—they must be at least a 12 inch square—that are made for cat beds at the Iowa Rescue League. These blankets can be made out of anything that would be cozy for a kitty to lie on. They can be made out of two layers of fleece and tied, they can have batting or not have batting, they can be made from knitted things, or any soft fabric. Cats don't care what color the blanket is and it's a great learning project for new sewers.
Please remember the dogs too! The Animal Rescue League accepts old bath towels and rugs for dog bathing and comfort. These items may be donated to the Animal Rescue League and they will give you a tax receipt for your donation. Also, Cathy Dimit has kindly offered to deliver to the Rescue League any snuggles that fellow guild members make. Just bring the snuggles to a guild meeting and give them to her.
Thanks Cathy, for sharing a great donation idea!

Do you remember the Freedom Quilts project—established by Betty Nielsen of Fonda, Iowa and a group of her quilting friends? They make quilts and have given them away to families who lost loved one in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks; to Hurricane Katrina survivors; and to the families of soldiers and Marines killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. So far, in 5 years they have made and given away about 6,000 quilts. They had asked for blue jean material this Spring and were swamped with donations. Cecilie Vogt contacted Betty Nielsen to see what else was needed and what our guild could do to help with this project.
Our guild donated fabric (larger pieces that were left after our "Treasure Sale" in May) that could be used as quilt backs. Cecilie boxed them up and sent them to Betty from the Ankeny guild. What a great group of generous quilters we have in our guild!

Thank you to Karen McTavish for the awesome lectures. Hopefully everyone was able to attend one. She was everything promised: entertaining, humorous, informal and definitely fun-filled. I got a chance to talk with her in between lectures and was quite impressed!
Thank you to all the AAQG guild members (and some guild members' husbands) that volunteered to help with the show. Whether you helped set up, brought food items, worked the show, helped take down, or worked on the raffle quilt all of you were needed and greatly appreciated!

Kris Brighton working at the show's Country Store.
The Country Store items were wonderful and we had more than ever! I am always impressed at how generous quilters are!
Thank you to all guild members that made donation quilts or donated suitcases throughout this past year. We displayed and will be able to donate approximately 115 quilts and a number of suitcases.
Welcome to the new guild members that signed up during the show! We can't wait to meet you!
Last but not least, thank you so much to the 2007 Quilt Show committee for all of your hard work, dedication, and countless hours you devoted to the show! This show could not have happened without all of you and you were so great to work with! To all guild members: Please consider a position on next year's committee. I guarantee that it will be rewarding and fun.
I had the pleasure of meeting two ladies that drove all night long from Tennessee and Oklahoma just to see our show! They had seen one of my advertisements on the web and just had to see our show! They spent most of the day at the show and enjoyed it immensely. I was honored to meet them. We had quilters from all over Iowa, many other states and at least one from another country. (I think it was Denmark.)
Be sure to check out all the pictures from the show on the web site. It looks very impressive from up high-thank you Shon from the college for taking those for us. The link to the photos is available at www.aaqg.net

The second highest raffle quilt ticket seller will win a sewing machine donated by The Stitching Place in Indianola. The third highest raffle quilt ticket seller will win $50!
