The next board meeting will be Tuesday, December 4, 2007, 5:30 p.m., at Chili's in Ankeny. This is a reminder that the January 2008 board meeting will be held on January 8th, before the guild meeting at 6:00 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, in Ankeny.
Come hear Ankeny's own: Dawn Cavanaugh. Since 1994 Dawn's custom freehand quilting has been winning awards for clients of her business, "Rockin' Bobbin Quilting, Inc." Her work has appeared in publications such as "A Century of Quilts", Quilter's Newsletter Magazine, American Patchwork & Quilting, Leisure Arts, House of White Birches, and Fons and Porter Books and magazines. Dawn also designs patterns. She has experience as a machine quilting judge and teaches classes regularly for American Professional Quilting Systems.
I hope you enjoyed last month's speaker. I don't know about you, but I was amazed that some of those antique quilts had survived so long considering, how poorly constructed some were.
December is the last month for the "Bring a Friend" membership drive. For each guest you bring, your name goes into a drawing for a $25 gift certificate from a local vendor. A winner will be drawn at the January meeting.
President's Letter cont.
Don't forget to bring your partner's quilted item, part of the President's Challenge, to the December meeting. We will be exchanging back our fat quarters. It will be interested to see what shapes they have taken. Don't trade them as soon as you get there—there will be a special time in Show and Tell when we will exchange.
A special thanks to MaryLee Martz, who stepped forward to take the position of Quilt Show Co-chair Elect. We are still in need of someone to take the Program Chair Elect Position. A number of months have already been scheduled, and there is an abundance of interested speaker's names and addresses—all you would need to do is contact them and get them scheduled. Even the Quilt Show speaker has already been scheduled. Jenna is more than willing to give you guidance and a helping hand. We have a GREAT Board this year; please consider being a part of it.
If you didn't pick up your directory at the last meeting, don't forget to pick it up at the next meeting.
Remember as the weather turns nasty, if the Ankeny schools close, we will not meet.
TIP of the month:— When using freezer paper for templates, cut a little nip along a long smooth side. You know the line is straight and when you go to remove the paper after ironing and cutting out you have a spot to hold on to the fabric and lift the freezer paper without any problem. Keeps from damaging edges of paper and fabric.
Cyndee Davis——President
11/6/07 Board meeting—
9/11/07 Guild meeting—Present: Present: Sharon Hawthorne, Therese Lumley, DonnaJo Smith, Sharon McCarthy, Susan Body, Randie Bartleman, Cyndee Davis
Meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. by President Cyndee Davis.
It was moved and seconded that the reading and approval of the October Board minutes be tabled until the December meeting, since Secretary Charlotte Stordahl was unable to attend.
There are 2 openings on the Board: Quilt Show Chair Elect (the second co-position) and Program Chair Elect. The openings will be solicited at both the next meeting and in the newsletter.
It was decided that a credit card is needed so that the Guild's online services can be purchased directly , rather than having to be paid by a Board member and then reimbursed. Our Treasurer Randie Bartleman will look into this.
Communication Editor Susan Body informed that new format changes to the website will be made to make it more user friendly. She also requested the deadline for submissions to the newsletter for December by Dec. 15.
Changes to the Membership Directory were discussed. It will be ready at the November meeting.
The December meeting will be held at 5:30 at Chili's and the January meeting will be held just before the Guild meeting at 6:00.
Respectfully submitted, Cyndee Davis, President
11/3/07 AAQG Guild meeting—
President Cyndee Davis called the meeting to order, welcoming our guests and new members.
She reminded us that if Ankeny Schools are canceled or let out early because of inclement weather— the AAQG meeting cancels. All members should bring their membership cards and wear name tags.
We are still looking for a Program Chair-Elect. This year's programs are set and Jenna with Cyndee's help will continue to contact speakers. Sign-up sheet for treats is being passed around—consider putting your name downand share something YUMMY! Ankeny's Hy-Vee will be hosting a Holiday Celebration, Thursday, Nov. 15, 5-7 PM. The musical play "Quilters" will be performed at
Secretary's Report Cont.
ISU, Nov. 9, 10,11, 30 and Dec. 1,2—tickets $15.00 at ISU ticket office or TicketMaster. Program calendars available tonight along with our membership directories. Deb P. reminded members they need to designate if their quilts will go to the Orphanage in Africa.
Anne Kruse filled us in on Quilt Show update—the show is well on its way—theme:"Pieceful Days- Pieceful Nights". The raffle quilt has been pieced, Gloria Ross will do the quilting and Ruth Chitwood the binding. Country Store donations are now being taken. Jenna Ingle filled us in on upcoming speakers and told what the program-chair-elect job would involve and what has already been set up for 2008-2009. She introduced the program for the night. Julie Hendrickson from Sun Prairie, WI, showed about 80 wonderful quilts, antique and reproductions. They inspired our members along with Julie's stories of collecting these quilts— Fascinating! Show and Tell by members and refreshments wrapped up the evening.

Heidi Kaisand, editor of American Patchwork and Quilting Magazine wrote in her "From the Editor" column (December 2007) that she and her husband Jeff welcomed two little girls to their family. Joining big brother Henry (age 3) are identical twin girls Virginia Rose and Goldie Maurine. The girls were born on April 10, 2007. (Heidi was our guild speaker last January)
Heidi also wrote in her editorial column "It is with great emotion that I say farewell and begin the next phase of my life, where I hope to find that delicate balance between the personal and professional. I won't be exiting the quilt world, however, and know many exciting adventures await. Best Wishes and keep quilting!"
Elizabeth Tisinger has been named Editor of American Patchwork & Quilting Magazine. This promotion was announced in the June 2007 issue. Elizabeth had been the editor of Quilts and More Magazine. Elizabeth and Heidi will work together to plan each issue and Elizabeth will "execute" the individual stories.
March 1, 2007 was the start day of the American Patchwork & Quilting wesite: www.allpeoplequilt.com The website has many web-exclusive features and extends the magazine on line. Log on and check it out!

Thanks for all the support of the Ankeny quilters for buying tickets for the Eastern Polk raffle quilt. The drawing was held Monday, Nov. 19th. The winner of the quilt was Helen Phillips from Altoona, a fellow quilter of about 7 years. She was very delighted.
We hope most of you have picked up your copy of the 2007-2008 Membership Directory—they will be available at the December meeting too. Our apologies to Elaine Kimberly for not including her in the directory. Please add Elaine's information to your membership book.

A very big THANK YOU to our guild members who have been working hard putting together next year's raffle quilt. We appreciate the time and talent you are giving to this project!
A special round of applause goes to:
Anne Kruse and Sharon McCarthy for cutting out the quilt
Joyce Romick for piecing the quilt
Gloria Ross for quilting the quilt
Ruth Chitwood for binding the quilt
It's getting to be that time of year again—so here's a reminder about our guild's winter weather policy!
If the Ankeny schools are cancelled (or evening activities at the schools are cancelled) due to weather there will be no quilt guild meeting or guild activities in the evening.
Have you started your holiday baking yet? You might want to add this to your baking list. Cecilie Vogt brought this yummy treat to guild in November and many of you requested the recipe.
You may use either a tube pan or a 13 x 9" pan for this cake. Spray pan with non-stick spray and dust lightly with unsweetened cocoa powder
Mix all the ingredients for the cake in a bowl with a mixer on low speed for 4 minutes
2 layer cake mix-devils food
8 oz. yogurt-plain or vanilla flavor
2 tbsp fine shredded orange peel
1/2 cup orange juice
1 whole egg
2 egg whites
2 tbsp vegetable oil
1/2 cup water
1 tsp ground cinnamon
Pour cake into prepared pan and bake at 350 for 40-50 minutes in a tube pan or 30-40 minutes in a 13 x 9 pan. You'll have to check to see when it's done. Cool in pan 10 minutes, then if using a tube pan remove cake to cool completely.
Icing- apply both icings, it doesn't matter which one you put on first
1/2 cup sifted powdered sugar
1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
2 tsp orange juice

Fons and Porter recently held a baby quilt contest. The rules were simple: Make an original design baby quilt of your choice, quilt it, and send it off to Love of Quilting. Ankeny guild members Janeen Pearson, Rita Bigelow, and Tamara Watts created a winning entry. Three friends were inspired to work on a quilt together and enter their first ever contest, where they won, Honorable Mention. Congratulations! View this quilt and more winners on the Fons and Porter website:www.fonsandporter.com
