The next board meeting will be Tuesday, May 6, 2008, 6:30 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny.
Pennie Horras is our featured speaker and her program, "I must be out of my mind!" includes a huge show and tell with many unique quilts from 20 plus years of quilt making. Her quilts have been exhibited at the International Quilt Festival in Houston, The American Quilters Society show in Paducah, the Iowa State Fair and the Iowa Quilters Guild show. She will have books, patterns and a wonderful collection of vintage hankies for sale after the lecture.
We are SEW glad to hear that JoAnn Dyar and John Pierschbacher on back on the MEND after their cardiac surgeries. Get well soon—we're looking forward to seeing some more of your quilts.
Happy Spring (finally) Fellow Quilters!
Are you working on your item for the Quilt Show? We have only 2 more months to get the forms in. Thanks to Jacque Johnson of Adel Quilting & Dry Goods for her great presentation and mini techniques workshop featuring stack and whack type blocks.
Needless to say, I had to refresh my stash with those pretty spring fabrics.
Be thinking about whom you want to nominate for the Mary Conkel Award in May. Here are the qualifications:
Mary Conkel Award— Annual award given to any guild member who embodies the following characteristics: Volunteers for jobs "behind the scenes" for the Guild, including making donation quilts, volunteering for shifts at the Quilt Show, and in other ways throughout the year. May be modest about their own talents, although they may be considerable, and shares knowledge and enthusiasm of quilting with others. May be involved in other community service activities. May have offered a number of years of service to the Guild.
Don't forget our meeting in June will be held the third Tuesday, rather than the second, because of Vacation Bible School being held at the church.
TIP of the month: Make your own "sharps container" for storing broken needles and pins to keep them out of the trashcan (or carpet), so someone doesn't get stuck accidentally. Use an empty pill bottle from your last pharmacy refill—use the childproof type top, or tape the top to the bottle. Make a small hole in the top with a corkscrew, ice pick or cup-hook. When a needle breaks, or gets dull, put it in the container. When the container is full dispose of it in the trash. This way no one gets hurt.
Happy quilting!

4/8/08 AAQG Guild Meeting
The meeting was called to order by Cyndee D., President, and she welcomed our guests. An announcement was made that JoAnn Dyar was in the hospital, Iowa Lutheran, recovering from surgery. Any well-wishes may be sent to her address in the directory. Pictures of the retreat are on display and we are encouraged to take any that we like. A big THANKYOU to Sharon H., retreat chair, for making that weekend such a huge success. All who participated had a great time and are looking forward to next year. Gloria Ross had retreat items that were left at retreat— please claim if you are missing something. We are reminded to please honor copyright laws when thinking about adding another pattern to our collections—via a friend. The Mary Conkel Award will be voted on in May and nominations are being taken now. Children and Families of Iowa sent us a thank you letter for the support we provide with suitcases and quilts. Eleven of the quilts donated last year were held on to and given out at Christmas and were greatly appreciated by those who received them. Raffle tickets are available for members to sell. Keep in mind that the income we get during the Quilt Show—admissions, Country Store, ticket sales pay for our programs. Do your part by selling your tickets, volunteering or what ever you can. It's all for the good of the guild. Deb. P. and Kay H. will be on the nominating committee and will be working on filling the positions open for next years board. Please think about volunteering and making their job easier. It is a good way to get to know other members and how the guild works. Besides—it's fun!..Quilt show entry forms are due JUNE 9TH . FORMS ONLY—not completed items. Jenna introduced Jacque, from Adel Quilting and Dry Goods, who was our program/entertainment during the viewing and voting of the Challenge Projects..We got a small glimpse of her fabulous store and a demonstration. Thanks so much! The evening ended with the announcement of Challenge winners, awards and food \ snacks for all.
4/01/08 AAQG Board Meeting
HIGHLIGHTS—The quilt show committee is considering raising the vendor rental fee (not this year) for future shows after looking into other shows and fees. The fabric donated by Grinnell Fiberworks will be saved & the new board can decide how best to use it. Each current board member who will be leaving their position are asked to organize and get their stuff/ responsibilities/ act together so the transition for the new board will be very smooth.

We now have 73 donation quilts! Yippee! We have til the June meeting to get more done so keep sewing. I do have a few more donation packets. I will put these last ones out in May and June. We also have maybe 15 suitcases— so if you have any more bring'em on.
Please keep in mind that officer nominations are coming up fast. Please read the responsibilities for each position in our bylaws so you are ready to say yes if I should ask you to fulfill a position. I do have at least one name for several positions already. THANK YOU so much for saying yes to my inquiry or for offering.—Debbie Pierschbacher
RAFFLE TICKETS—Our words of wisdom are SELL, SELL, SELL and for two very good reasons. First, the sales from these tickets support our wonderful programs throughout the year and we want those types of programs to continue. Second, there are three great prizes for those individuals who sell the top three sales. You could win one of two sewing machines or a $100 gift certificate (so you can buy more fabric!). Ask friends, family, neighbors, co-workers. If you need more tickets, please contact Jan Hart.
ENTRY FORM—In this newsletter you will find the two-page Entry Form. We have tried to streamline it and eliminate any duplication. Please remember that you need one Entry Form for each quilt entry. They need to be post-marked by June 9th or dropped off at the Quilter's Cupboard or the Ankeny Sewing Center by June 9th before the end of the business day.
WE NEED YOU TO VOLUNTEER—As a member of the Ankeny Quilt Guild, it's wonderful to enter quilts in our annual quilt show. We also need you to help us to set up on July 10th, work anytime July 11th and 12th, and tear down on the 12th. We also need members to bring bars, cookies, fruit, and veggies. We will have a sign-up sheet at our May meeting. Let's each do our part and help at the quilt show. Happy quilting!—Anne Kruse & Sharon McCarthy
